Our friends in Kerry County Council and Crainn CiarraI are hosting a fantastic two day event celebrating hedgerows and trees in Kerry. Taking place on Friday October 24th in Tralee Bay Wetlands and on Saturday October 25th in Local Roots Tree Nursery, Cromane, the event is awash with information and entertainment.

The Kerry Biosphere is delighted to team up with Kerry County Council once again with double-header launch event scheduled in Killarney Library at 15:30pm on Friday October 17th. Kerry County Council have collaborated with a host of artists to create hedgerows themed artwork including creative writing pieces and small sculptures. We can link Our Wild Native Woodlands with this initiative.

We are delighted with the progress of 'Our Wild Woodlands' booklet. Artists from Kerry and beyond answered our call for an artist to help us with our booklet and we were thrilled with the response.  We have commissioned a talented artist to prepare illustrations for inclusion in our booklet, the images capture the essesnce of the woodland species. The booklet comprises short stories, poetry, and illustrations to highlight the intrinsic beauty of Ireland's native woodland habitats.

We were thrilled to welcome Mr Féidhlim Harty to the Kerry Biosphere once again. Féidhlim hosted an interesting and relevant workshop in the beautiful surroundings of Killarney House on the morning of Thursday August 28th. We went into depth on topics such as managing stormwater and wastewater in sustainable, cost effective ways that are low impact on our natural resources.

The Kerry Biosphere, with support from Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council Arts has developed a booklet, 'Our Wild Woodlands'. The booklet has been developed to highlight the intricate value of our native woodlands and the habitats and species they support. We are highlighting the beauty of the woodlands through the medium of art.

We are delighted to host Féidhlim Harty once again to facilitate a workshop in Killarney House on Thursday August 28th. Féidhlim's workshop will focus on nature based solutions for water management and for tackling biodiversity loss. The workshop will be interactive, informative, and entertaining. We will be delivering the workshop in the comfortable surroundings of the Garden Room in Killarney House.

We are delighted to host Féidhlim Harty once again for our last workshop in support of our Rainwater Planter Initiative. Féidhlim's knowledge and expertise are wide reaching and our workshop is sure to be informative and entertaining in equal doses. Whether you are a farmer, lamdowner, or have a general interest in biodiversity and nature based solutions then there will be something for you.

The last of our rainwater planters have been installed with support from National Parks and Wildlife Service and Kerry County Council. The planters are sited in Killarney Community College and the Port Road Playground (Knockreer Playground). The planters were skilfully crafted by Killarney Men's Shed.

The Kerry Biosphere strives to engage with and help the local community groups and organisations in the reserve. In support of this the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Officer Brendan Kirwan and Acres Kerry / West Cork manager Patricia Deane hosted an in-house presentation to Tús and RSS Supervisors employed by SKDP in the region. The TÚS programme aims to provide short-term, quality work opportunities for those who are unemployed and to provide certain services of benefit to communities in South Kerry. SKDP's Rural Social Scheme (RSS) aims to provide income support for farmers and fishermen and to provide certain services of benefit to rural communities. The RSS allows low-income farmers and fishermen who are actively farming or fishing, to earn a supplementary income.

The Killarney Men's Shed have installed the last of our five rainwater planters in the Biosphere. With thanks to Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service we were able to fund five planters in the region. The aim of our initiaitve was to raise awareness of nature based solutions. We can use nature and natural processes to manage our stormwater. The planters comprise a simple design that will lessen the pressures on stormwater systems.
